Shining a Light on Eco-Friendly According to the U.S. Department of Energy, almost 20% of electricity use by a commercial building is consumed by lighting, making it the largest consumer over any other use. Unfortunately, most of this energy is wasted in spaces that are overlit or unoccupied. Premier can install lighting control systems, like Lutron’s EcoSystem™, to help dramatically decrease energy usage in the workplace. How? Using digital electronic dimming ballasts, controls and environmental sensors, EcoSystem™ adjusts electric lighting to maintain light levels—from dimming as sunlight increases to shutting off when a space is unoccupied. The Result? A reduction of energy costs, increased comfort and productivity, and a decrease of maintenance costs. Did You Know? Lutron provided a total energy-saving lighting system for the new 52-story New York Times building. The Director of Construction found a 72 percent reduction in lighting energy because of Lutron’s system. Based on an electricity rate of $0.15 per kWh, savings from the lighting system added up to $30,000 per year, per floor.
